Welcome

What started as a digital diary to document a newfound journey as a stay at home mom / wife has quickly evolved into my own little corner on the internet where I share all that life brings my way -- the good, the bad, and those "aha!" moments. All with a hint of sarcasm, a dash of truth and bold European wit. Thanks for following along!

Day 2 of #BLOGMAS :: 4 Must See Christmas Light Displays In Portland, OR

Today we're talking about things to see in Portland, Oregon that have that Christmas-y feel / vibe to them. If you're ever in the Pacific Northwest during the holidays, make sure you see some of these cute spots.

#1: ZOOLIGHTS

Zoo Lights happen every year and it usually runs from November 24th to January 7th -- with Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Years Eve and Day being closed for the actual holidays. It's a winter lights festival and while you walk around in the brisk PNW weather to gaze on beautiful lights, there are some times live choirs serenading you with lovely Christmas carols. It's a great excuse for a family outing, fresh air, and exercise.  [ Opens at 5pm and closes at 9pm. ]

#2: CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Another annual festival, but this one is community based (and is close to my heart as I used to volunteer here each year I was in high school). At a local Catholic Church in NE Portland, the Grotto takes you on a scenic walk, where nature is covered in lights and you get to hear the story of Jesus' birth. When you're done with the walk, you're taken to church where you can listen in on school and church choirs giving Christmas performances, watch a puppet show, or visit their local petting zoo. The also have a nice little gift shop that you can visit on your way out. The Festival of Lights at the Grotto runs from November 25th to December 30th. [ Opens at 5 pm and closes at 10 pm. ]

#3: PEACOCK LANE

This is one of my favorite spots because it's historic -- it's been a holiday tradition for these home owners for decades and it's just so much fun to walk through!  Peacock Lane is a street that has each house DECKED out in holiday displays. It's a lot of fun to see how over the top and creative some home owners go when it comes to "decking the halls." It runs from December 15th to December 31st.   Peacock Lane has three nights dubbed "pedestrian night" (the 15th, 16th, and 17th this year) where they close of the road to cars and allow crowds of people to walk along the display [ Streets are open at 6pm to 11 pm. ]

#4: WINTER WONDERLAND

This display is said to be the largest Christmas light display west of the Mississippi River. I love this display because you pack up the family van with home made hot chocolate in everyone's hand and drive through what seems like a Christmas light wonderland. You stay warm, seated, and just cruise on through -- that's what I call a win! The Winter Wonderland display starts November 24th until December 26th. They're the one of the few places that are open on Christmas Eve and Day. [ Opens at 5:30pm and closes at 9:30pm, on the weekends they close at 11:30pm. ]
